The pilosebaceous unit is a structure in the skin that consists of several components related to hair growth and sebum (oil) production. These components include the hair root, which anchors the hair to the skin; the hair bulb, which surrounds the hair root and provides vital nutrients; the dermal papilla, which is a small protrusion of the dermis that nourishes the hair follicle; the sebaceous appendage, which is a gland responsible for producing sebum to lubricate the skin and hair; and the arrector pili muscle, which is a smooth muscle that causes the hair to stand erect when it contracts. All of these components work together to ensure proper functioning of the hair and sebaceous glands.
